Could be a Fila be right for me or me for him/her?

Message  Chiaraluna le Ven 11 Jan - 22:13

Hallo! I am a new member of this forum!
This is my banal but at the same time very important question: i really like the FSM but I am not sure that my present life conditions are compatible with this dog.
First of all, I admit that the FSM is not my only favourite breed. I also like the Karst Shepherd, the Eurasier and the Belgian shepherds Groenendael and Tervueren...
At the moment I live with my mother in an apartment, we have two dogs: one male Siberian Husky aged 13 and a female mongrel aged 6/7.
I work 6 hours a day from monday to friday, I take my dogs for two walks per day (about 45 mins each).
I love to train my girl, Maggie, and teach her some obedience tricks; in February I will begin to attend a course to become a dogs trainer!
I own a fenced yard where I take my dogs three or more times a week (it depends on the season!) but this yard is 15 mins by car from my home... so I can't take them there every day...
I am looking for a medium sized dog, possibly with short hair (Husky docet...) ... continue...

... with a good protection instinct, a poor barker, an obedient dog, a dog that could live together with my other two furry friends... I know, I know, this would be a bionic dog!!!
Another important thing for me is that the dog should not have a strong prey instinct, or better, it would be wonderful if he had a LOW prey instinct, since I like to take my dogs off leash in the country at least once a week... for example, the breeder of my Husky advised me not to leave the dog off leash due to the strong prey instinct of this breed, but believe me, I have never had problems about it!
Hoping not to have bored you, thank you!!! Smile

hey,

first of all, the prey instinct is very low. i walk my 5 months old puppy every day in the forest where tons of animals live. I know, that he knows, feels and smells them. But when I say "no" it's fine for him and he won't leave our path. Actually we never met any deers or rabbits yet, but also with horses, cats etc he doesn't show any prey instinct.
he is more a gardien and especially he would be an excellent herding dog, if we would allow him to work our horses and persons Cool

With the other two dogs, I guess it depends on socialisation. We have another male (3 years) in the appartment and he accepts him als leader and loves him. Actually, he loves every other dog he meets. If you educate him right, there won't be a problem.
if your appartment is big enough for 3 big dogs?

Bonjour!
Thank you for your reply!
Well, concerning my dogs there are some things to think about:

Itto Sib. Husky age 13: a dog that is not a dog, it is a person... He is old now, so he sadly suffers of various age sicknesses i.e. he is more and more weak on his hips, in fact at the moment I must take the dogs for the daily walks separately, exept when we go to the yard (about 3 times a week).
He is a dog who accepts everybody, humans or dogs, he is friendly but not particularly interested in relatonships... It must be said that he knows he doesn't have enough phisical strenght to face an angry dog, so it is my responsability taking care of his safety!!!

Maggie mongrel age 6/7: a girl that I adopted from a shelter, maybe for this reason she is "crazy" for me and in some ways she is jealous towards Itto. She is friendly with other dogs, males and females, and with humans, exept some kind of men (due to previous bad experiences? Who knows). With some female dogs she tends to be a little bit dominant, above all for the things that concern the resources: food, toys and my attentions...

I would prefer to add a female to my family rather than a male, but it is my duty to protect the health of my dogs so I would never put in trouble my pets if there were any risk of aggression between the dogs... I hope I have been clear enough!!! Smile

Everything depends on education, my opinion. You should only know, that some Filas (mine included) are not very sensible. That means, that he can be really annoying towards other dogs when he wants to play. But on the other hand, if the other one (or me) says no, it's fine, but he doesn't take a no while patting serious.

I think it could be fine, if you teach him being easy on your grandpa-dog Itto Smile

Dear Cécile, I agree with you... it depends on education above all!
The main problem at the moment is Itto physical conditions... I am not sure to be able to manage 3 dogs with such different needs... But, forgive me if I say such a thing, I know it is quite shocking, I JUST DON'T WANT TO WAIT UNTIL THE DAY ITTO WON'T BE HERE ANYMORE Sad
Because I hope that Itto will live well at least 2 years or even more, if possible, but at the same time 2 or more years are too much time to wait to realize a dream...
Please don' t judge me if you can, I know it is sad and I know I am absolutely selfish Sad

I won't juge you Smile I also hoped to have a Fila-puppy next to my old dog, but unfortunatly it didn't work out..

i think nobody but you can give you an answer to that particular question.

take you time thinking. since you have to import a Fila to Italy, you HAVE time, because first you need a good breeder with dogs you like and second you have to wait until he has puppies Smile
(it took me 4 years!! Razz )
